The executive director of the Food Bank of Northern Nevada won a national award for her work, and it means $75,000 for the charity.

At the Unite 4 Good Humanity Awards Dinner in Los Angeles Thursday night, Cherie Jamason received the non-profit's National Humanity Inspiration Award.

Earlier this month, Jamason was one of five finalists who received a $25,000 award for the food bank, just for being nominated. She won an addition $50,000 as part of her winnings.

Jamason has been with the Food Bank for 25 years, and says being named a finalist for the award is great recognition for the staff and volunteers here in Northern Nevada. "The work that we do at our Food Bank is really noted around the nation and that might be surprising to folks."

The Food Bank has collected millions of pounds of food to meet the immediate needs of people who would otherwise go hungry. In early February, Jamason told us that looking ahead to the bigger picture has put the Food Bank of Northern Nevada on the map.

"At the end of the day, the best answer to somebody who needs help is a great job. Does that mean we need to be in the business of creating jobs? No. But we need to be able to partner strategically so that we can help people fill those needs."

Jamason is recognized for her dedication and for inspiring others to do good things.

"It's acknowledgement that I'm on the right track, that the work we're doing makes sense and it is incredibly humbling. Truly."
