Washoe County School District to Aggregate, Release Data

Posted: Updated:

The Washoe County School District is making an effort to be more transparent by releasing its data to the public. It includes everything from school performance and trends in test scores to the district's financial information.

This week the district held its annual Data Summit to go over the most important numbers. But if you're like most people - and you don't have the time to attend the summits, the district is pushing forward an initiative to put all of the information online through its new data warehouse.

"We've had some great success over the last few years-- moving our grad rate, moving up kids going to college, narrowing some achievement gaps, but in order to keep going, we really kind of have to get all hands on deck looking at some of the issues in there," says Ben Hayes, WCSD Chief Accountability Officer.

And part of getting all hands on deck-- is sharing the key numbers with members of the community who benefit from an improved education system. That includes parents and students, but also the higher education community and business leaders.

Hayes walked me through some of the data - just a piece of what will be available to the public when the data warehouse launches. It will serve as a jumping off point for people to look at the general trends and dive deeper into the numbers that previously would have been harder to locate.

"Our goal is to make things user friendly, so that anyone can understand what the data means."

The data warehouse is expected to be fully accessible by the start of the fall semester.
