Doctors' Wives Rummage Sale Helps Future Nurses

Posted: Updated:

The Annual Physicians' Wives Rummage Sale is just around the corner. And while it always results in some great deals on everything from cut glass to fur coats, it is also funding future nurses in both TMCC's nursing program and with the Orvis School of Nursing at UNR. Students like Samantha Threats.

"I really want to be a labor and delivery nurse," Threats said at today's awards ceremony. "And eventually I want to be a certified nurse midwife. Right now my husband is supporting me and our three children on his own. And this scholarship means a lot so that I can stop worrying about money and really focus on my studies and get done."

And national studies show that if she does complete her degree, her kids have a better chance of following in her footsteps.

"Those studies show that if someone completes their degree their kids are 80% more likely to as well," says Paula Lee Hobbs who is with the TMCC Foundation.

Kim Baxter with the Orvis Nursing School says a lot of the local graduates stay here.

"Many of them work locally and give great care to those right here in this community. We are so very lucky to the Alliance with the Washoe County Medical Society here and able to help us like this."

Over the course of the 63 years the rummage sale has been going on, it has raised nearly $2- million for scholarships and for other local non-profits. This year they awarded scholarships to both TMCC and UNR's nursing programs and to 11 other non-profits helping in the community.

This year's event is Saturday starting at 8 a.m. at the Reno Livestock Events Center, located at 1350 North Wells Avenue. It costs $3 to get in. And they say the line starts forming about 6:30 a.m.
