Midtown Reno Undergoes a Mural Makeover

Posted: Updated:

If you've been through Midtown Reno lately you may have noticed an artistic transformation underway. Not only are more businesses moving there, but they are reclaiming their walls. More and more artistic murals are appearing. Which is good for businesses and good for the artists.

"It's almost like having a billboard for my work," says Joe C. Rock. "I've done like maybe 15 of them. Lulu's, Junkee Clothing Exchange and one of the ones at the end of Nevada Fine Arts."

He says he basically finds the work through word of mouth.

"People see my work now and ask about me. I paint on the weekends so I can keep my full-time job at Junkee, but I paint as much as I can."

And he's not alone. Neither is Junkee Clothing Exchange. A lot of businesses are investing in the artwork.

"It's a great way to add some color and break up the landscape," says Ty Martin of Craft Beer and Wine. "Plus, it keeps the taggers away. They seem to have some respect for the art and if they tag a mural, it may not even really be seen. It blends in. So they leave them alone."

It's a clear artistic outlet and it's setting Midtown apart with its own unique look. Some would even say that it shows Midtown really investing in imagining its own future.
