Ex-Tribal Leader Wears Bulletproof Vest to Court

Posted: Updated:

The ousted leader of a small American Indian tribe in northeastern California wore a bulletproof vest to her first court appearance on charges she shot and killed four people and tried to murder two others at a meeting to evict her from tribal housing.

Cherie Lash Rhoades was in Modoc County Superior Court in Alturas, Calif., on Tuesday for arraignment on four counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder.

District Attorney Jordan Funk says the judge agreed to continue the arraignment until Monday at the defense's request.

Defense attorney Antonio Alvarez said he had just gotten the case and didn't have any comment.

The lawyer for the Cedarville Rancheria says Rhoades was suspended as chairwoman pending a federal investigation into missing tribal funds.  (AP)
