Minden Airport Receives Permanent Fire Retardant Tank

From Douglas County:

The Bureau of Land Management brought a 10,000 gallon tank for fire retardant to be permanently installed at the Minden-Tahoe Airport. This will allow the airport the capability to respond to a fire at a more efficient cost and with quicker response time.

Over the past couple of years, when fire attack aircraft, primarily the Single Engine Air Tankers (SEATs) operate out of Minden, they bring a semi tanker full of fire retardant. Each time these tanks had to get activated which was not cost efficient, and included the cost firefighting time. Now they will have a tank ready on site for fire season, allowing for a quicker response to fires.

The tank will be installed in a permanent containment area near the Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center at the north end of the airport.

"We will be ready for this year's potentially difficult fire year and for years to come as well," said Bobbi Thompson, Airport Manager.
