Community Groups Reach Out to Veterans

Posted: Updated:

Today more than 50 student soldiers lined up to chow down on some food at the University of Nevada.

The Wolf Pack Veterans Group is reaching out to student vets. We're told the transition back to life after war can be tough for some students.

"Sometimes they just need mentorship and support and camaraderie and everything that they have on the inside, they need it on the outside as well," Caleb Cage, Director, Military & Veterans Policy.

Jeremy Schachter says, "It's just a good feeling to help out each other you know? Because after you get out of the service it always feels like you're kind of left out."

Across town - Hero 2 Hired hosted a job fair for veteran soldiers.

"Veterans have very good discipline. They're hard working people as well," says Robert Tinnin,  District Manager, Fastenal. "Honesty, integrity.. I think those are very strong qualities for veterans as well."

We caught up with Bruce Parks who served in the Army. He's been unemployed for over a year - he says he's optimistic after speaking with one employer.

"I have applied there several times but I spoke specifically with the person that does the hiring this morning."

Over the past year more than 1,000 veterans have been helped statewide through the Hero 2 Hired and National Guard Employment programs - and almost half have jobs now.

"If you're looking for a job and you're doing the Internet search but you haven't been going out and networking, you should. This is the place to do exactly that."

If you were not able to make it to some of these events, no worries. There are several other vet events coming up at UNR - and another veteran job fair is scheduled for Friday in Carson City at 851 E. William Street. Register at LEllis@Carson.org or call 775-283-7579.
