Truckee River Stocked With Trout

Posted: Updated:

The Nevada Department of Wildlife stocked the Truckee River with several thousand trout on Thursday morning near Galetti Way.

Crews released the first of 35,000 trout into the Truckee at Fisherman's Park.

Usually, they don't stock the Truckee until mid-to-late March. But they're did it today because they are expecting low river flows this summer caused by back-to-back years of drought.

"Mother Nature is not being very good to us this winter so we're trying to look ahead," said Kim Tisdale, supervising fisheries biologist for the Nevada Department of Wildlife. "If we don't, we'll end up with a hatchery full of fish and no place to put them."

By the way, if you get the urge to fish during the next few weeks, you are in luck. NDOW says you can still use your fishing license from last year until the end of February.

The limit on trout will be lowered from five trout to three, bringing Truckee River limits in line with the area's other urban fisheries. For a complete set of Nevada's angling rules and regulations, consult the Nevada fishing guide http://www.ndow.org/Education/Publications/Fishing_Guide/ which can be found on the NDOW website.

NDOW annually stocks about a million fish each year throughout the state.  Western Nevada waters received nearly 450,000 of those fish in any given year. NDOW's hatchery program is supported by anglers through their annual purchase of fishing licenses and trout stamps.
