Cold, Flu Cases Up in Washoe County

Posted: Updated:

Washoe County is seeing an uptick in cold and flu cases even as we get closer to the end of the season.

What do health officials say is behind the increase in cases?

They tell us it's not necessarily about the strength of the bug - medical professionals say it's more likely that it's our fault for not being careful enough. "It's mostly preventable by making sure that you use good hygiene. Covering your cough, covering your sneezes, making sure that you're washing your hands," says Dana Ayala.

Washoe County has seen more than 700 cases of the flu this season and 17 new ones just in the first week of February.

This particular strain of flu affects vulnerable people like kids and the elderly but it's also hitting healthy young adults as well.

Ayala says they've also seen more cases of the cold come through their office.

She says that's due in large part to people not staying home when they're sick and spreading it to their classmates and co-workers. "If you're sick, you should stay home. And if your kid is sick, you should keep them home if you are able to."

Ayala also says it's not uncommon to get the cold then feel better then get it again just a week or so later.

But if that continues to happen she says you should see your doctor because it could have turned into a bacterial infection that would require antibiotics.
