From Sex Shop to Fitness in Midtown Reno

Posted: Updated:

For years as you drove down Virginia Street it was hard to miss the telltale pink of Romantic Sensations. Like so many businesses along Reno's main drag, the adult store embodied part of old Reno's personality.

But the new Reno is leaving the old in the dust.

"Taking it from Romantic Sensations to this is a huge step for our community in general."

Getting rid of all the pink and seedy was hard work. They had to strip the 83-year-old building down to its bones. "There was some...dirtiness to clean up. There were some pictures laying around... There is some mail coming in that's a little questionable..."

But these guys are no strangers to working hard. Workout sequence, jumping rope, pull-ups, rowing, etc. And they're hoping the rest of Reno will get on board.

The Double Edge philosophy is all about getting people's bodies back to functioning the way they're supposed to. "The idea of functional fitness is being able to get up out of a chair, being able to put your bag up into overhead storage on airplanes..." says Wellock.

"We have a squat rack and a bench rack build into here..."

And their equipment is functional too with a lot of it serving multiple purposes. The rooms adapt for Crossfit classes, TRX classes and personal training.

"This is the personal training section down here..."

They also have massage therapy rooms, a child playroom and a retail center. So you can get in shape while helping Reno "shape up" at the same time. "To be in Reno, go through college, graduate, get into this career and then be a part of revitalizing a part of your community, is possibly one of the most rewarding feelings I could have right now," says Wellock.

Double Edge Fitness has taken over the old Romantic Sensations building taking the "health and fitness" of Midtown to a whole new level.

Double Edge Fitness is located at 1065 South Virginia Street. They are open Monday through Saturday. They're having a grand opening celebration all day on March 15. The public is invited to stop by and check it out.
