Students Make Special Holiday Deliveries to Reno VA Hospital

Posted: Updated:

For a week, first graders at Veterans Elementary School in Reno have been focused on making Valentines. A lot of Valentines. Not for each other, but for some local heroes; the veterans at the V.A. Hospital just a few blocks away from their school. And Friday morning they paraded to the hospital to deliver them.

"Thank you, thank you, happy Valentine's Day" you could hear all through the hallways.

"For years, we've come here to Trick-or-Treat on Halloween," said Kristin Nguyen who organized the effort. "And this was our way of giving back. We started with a list of categories and made out the Valentines to veterans, Americans and friends. And a few days ago we realized we needed another category. Superhero, because they really are super heroes," she said.

And while they don't think of themselves as that, they were all very appreciative for the visit and the cards.

"There really aren't any words for it," said James Wilson, U.S. Army Retired. "I mean my heart is filled with joy knowing they bothered to do all of this and to thank people they don't even really know."

But they have already learned what they did. And six-year-old Cloe said it pretty well.

"They went to war to keep us free."

Yes they did. And the project was such a good lesson in life, the school will be doing it again next year.
