Storm Leaves 14 Dead, More Than a Foot of Snow in Northeast

Fourteen deaths have now been attributed to the winter storm that is wreaking havoc in the Mid-Atlantic region and the Northeast. A truck driver in Virginia who was working to clear snowy roads was hit this morning by another dump truck.

To the south, even though the worst of the storm has passed, trees and driveways are covered with ice, and hundreds of thousands are without power. Atlanta temperatures are rising today, but will drop below freezing again overnight.

In North Carolina, troops in big-wheeled Humvees have been patrolling the roads, looking for stranded motorists. The storm brought traffic to a virtual standstill in the Research Triangle area yesterday as it coated much of the state in snow and ice.

The storm has now dumped more than a foot of snow in parts of the Mid-Atlantic region. Streets have been largely deserted in the nation's capital this morning, with residents heeding warnings to stay off the roads. Federal offices and the city's two main airports are closed. Baltimore awoke to 15 inches of snow.

The storm is the latest in an unending onslaught of winter weather that has depleted salt supplies and caused schools to run out of snow days.  (AP)
