Sparks Police have identified the victims in a Thursday morning shooting on H Street in Sparks as 29-year-old Janai Wilson and 34-year-old Cody Devine.

Police tell us a caretaker of a vacant home got a tip that squatters were at the residence. While checking the home, police say shots rang out and Devine died at the scene, while Wilson was hit several times including gunshots to the leg and arm.

Wilson is recovering at Renown Regional Medical Center with non life-threatening injuries after being found on I Street. "We believe that the shooting did happen inside the residence and after she was shot, she left on foot and was found about a block and a half away."

The property owner called the police after the shooting happened. Evidence from the scene has been collected and the investigation is on-going. "We've got the shooter. He's cooperating and is talking to us at this time and we're going to interview witnesses and try to find out what happened here."

It's not clear what the intruders were doing in the vacant house, but police say they have seen a number of squatters throughout the area. "With the high number of foreclosures and the vacant homes, we do see some squatters in the area. We get a fair amount of people that are squatting inside vacant residences but it seems to be declining."

Hawkins says situations like this one are very uncommon. And says in cases where intruders are inside a home it's best not to take matter into your own hands. "It's always a safer avenue to call us than go investigate it yourself."

Nearby schools were also locked down for a few hours. That's a standard precaution during police-related matters in the area.

We don't know if the shooter will face charges since it involved intruders in his home.
