It was lunchtime and Edwin Mendoza was choking his food down. Literally.

"I stuffed my hamburger in my mouth and headed outside," he says. "Then I realized it didn't go down. I tried to swallow again and it still wouldn't go down. I ran to the water fountain and before I could get there, I noticed my vision was blurry and I thought I was going to pass out."

Zach Jensen and his friends were walking by and saw him.

"He had his hands around his throat and I knew something was wrong so I turned him around and thrust my hands into his stomach twice and the food came out."

Simple and impressive. Assistant Principal Joye Williams was walking by and saw it all happen.

"He was so calm and so confident. He didn't even hesitate; he just did it," she says.

His mother had shown him a YouTube video on what to do if someone was choking so that he'd know what to do if his big sister choked. "Oh, and he reminded me that we had recently watched Mrs. Doubtfire!," Stephanie Jensen said.

Zach may get a school award for his heroics, but right now, like his classmates, he's finishing up scheduled testing at school. And some would say he's already learned a real important lesson in life....compassion.
