Dentist Offers Tips for Healthy Teeth in Children

Posted: Updated:

Each February the American Dental Association sponsors National Children's Dental Health Month. They say cavities are entirely preventable.

"I just have my last meal, brush my teeth and go to bed."

At nine years old Jordan is in charge of his teeth and keeping them healthy - and that's exactly what dentists want. But what might surprise you is that up until nine years of age, experts say parent are still supposed be helping.

"Small children do not have the manual dexterity to brush and floss properly themselves."

So, Dr. Ann Campbell says get your kids into a routine at a young age and have them brush their own teeth first, but then..."have the parent follow-up with that and have the parent actually brush their children's teeth every night."

Dr. Campbell also suggests bringing your kids to the dentist when they're little, and letting them see the instruments used ...and she says never ever mention the dreaded shot.

"We tell the child 'the doctor is going to put some medicine next to your tooth, make the tooth go to sleep so we can fix it.'" But if your kid doesn't buy that line, and an injection is inevitable, there's something called a dental-vibe that works much like an electric toothbrush to help dull the pain. "The dental vibe itself has a specific amplitude that it's set for to help block pain receptors."

Jordan tried it and didn't even flinch when the needle went in. Jordan also says kids should find a dentist that helps them feel comfortable.
