Local Cheer Team Needs Your Help to Get to Nationals

Posted: Updated:

For the first time a local high school cheer team has qualified to compete in a national competition. The North Valleys High School cheer team is so close to going, but there's one thing standing in the way. Now they're reaching out to the community for help.

The team qualified for nationals in Anaheim, California after competing in the regional's competition for the first time in January. They've been practicing their stunts for months and the only things holding them back is funding for the competition.

The North Valleys High school cheer team has been practicing for months to get here. Jasper Remaley is in her first year as head coach on the varsity squad. She's been involved in cheer for almost a decade and now she's got 29 students getting ready for the big national competition in Anaheim. "It's pretty exciting we've been working since about June to make this happen," said Remaley.

The group qualified for nationals after competing in the regional's competition for the first time last month. "At the regional event you have to score a 75 or greater. That includes your stunts and your tumbling," said Remaley.

The team is practicing three routines. One for an all boys stunt group, another for all girls and a routine for the entire team. That's a lot of bending, tumbling and twirling. "We've had practices in the morning, in the afternoon and sometimes we have practices for 4 hours straight," said junior Bryce England.

Senior Beau Dietmeier just joined the team this year. He is one of eight guys on the competition team. He says he has been working out since he was a freshman to build strength for a sport like cheer. "It's a lot harder than what I expected," said Dietmeier.

Assistant Coach Raquel Riggle says there's a lot of different training that goes into preparing for these big competitions. "There's a lot of elements that are really difficult for them and it took them a while to master it but they just keep going and pushing themselves," said Riggle.

The biggest obstacle for the team is coming up with the funding to pay to go to nationals in Anaheim. They still need to raise $20,000 to get there. Coach Remaley says the team is optimistic and hopes the community will step up and help out. "We're looking at about $20,000 that we need to raise in order to get us to nationals and that includes all the costs of transportation and food and the Disneyland tickets and registration and all of that," said Remaley. "We've raised about $1,500 in a week and a half, so we're moving towards it but we need to get a lot more momentum here."

The national competition is in March. The North Valleys cheer team has several different fundraisers coming up to help them cover the costs of the trip.

The indoor trampoline park, EZ Air is holding a cheer stunt fundraiser on Feb. 12th from 3pm-8pm. It costs $10, and 40% of the proceeds raised that day will go towards the NVHS cheer squad if you mention the cheer team.

An all-you-can-eat spaghetti feed is being held on Feb. 14th in the NVHS cafeteria. It costs $5 per person and goes from 5pm-7pm.

Red Robin is also hosting a 'Tip a Cheerleader' night on Feb. 15th at the Red Robin by the mall from 11am-2pm and 4pm-8pm. Visitors who mention the team will have a portion of the tips donated to the NVHS cheer fund.

NVHS is hosting a cheer camp on 2/17 from 10am-4pm at 1470 E. Golden Valley Road in Reno. The camp costs $50, but you can pay a reduced fee of $35 if you sign up early. Participants will get basic cheer and dance training. Contact jremaley@washoeschools.net for details.

Two car washes have been scheduled on 2/22 and 3/22 both from 10am-2pm at the Lemmon Valley Walgreens.

The group has an online campaign to raise money through Gofundme.com here: http://www.gofundme.com/6jtcnc

The group is also accepting direct donations with checks payable to NVHS cheer.
