"He always said he knew his life wasn't going to be long, so I think he lived every day. He got up every day and he was happy to be alive." Ruth Nichols met her husband, Tom, when they were in the second grade. It was not until they reconnected at a party after college that they realized they were meant to be married. Ruth moved to Reno, where Tom attended the University of Nevada and they started their life together and brought a baby into this world.
Little Nicholas was a miracle for the couple, in fact, because long before he was born, Tom's kidneys started failing from an auto-immune disease. Just after Nicholas turned one, Tom learned he would receive a kidney transplant. "That was such a gift. It allowed Tom to have six more months with Nicholas," said Ruth, who then shared that Tom died when Nicholas was 18 months old. "Nicholas makes me smile every day because he's got his dad's smile."
Since that horribly difficult time in Ruth's life, she has pushed through every day. She promised Tom she would care for and raise a remarkable human being. She is also working to inspire women all over the world. Ruth teamed up with her dear friend, Beth - who is also a survivor - to start a business close to their hearts. Beth fought breast cancer and treatment was brutal for her. Her doctors called her the poster child for everything than can go wrong during cancer treatment. "She was just ready to give up. She said I don't care if I die; I can't take one more chemo and the words trust your journey came to her in a gift."
Weeks later, when Tom passed away, Beth shared the same phrase with Ruth. As they healed together, they realized more women needed to hear those same words. They started a business selling product with comforting quotes. They sell everything from jewelry to mugs, journals, soaps and even inspirational apparel. The best part is the women ask to hear back from every person they touch. Every item sent out comes with a postcard, on which their customers can share more about their own stories. Ruth and Beth have received countless postcards! While they have worked to inspire women, they are actually the ones being inspired and their business is flourishing as a result. Proof, perhaps, that life is full of ups and downs, but wherever it takes you – Trust Your Journey.
