Winnemucca Police: Threat Invalid, Still on High Alert

The Winnemucca Police Department says rumors of a threat to Lowry High School Friday morning, are just that.

Captain William "Bill" Dalley tells Channel 2, the rumors started after a student thought he saw a box of bullets in another student's backpack. 

He says school officials investigated the matter, and found that was not the case. However, he says this sparked a rumor that a shooting would take place at the school Friday.

Captain Dalley says, although the rumor was found to be invalid, they still take any and all threats seriously. He says they will be on "heightened alert" today.

This comes after the Humboldt County School District created a post on its Facebook page saying:

"Rumor has been circulating regarding a potential threat at Lowry High School tomorrow. As with all threats, they are taken seriously. An investigation was conducted this afternoon and the concern was not able to be substantiated. We have been in touch with local law enforcement who will have an increase in patrols in response. We wanted to make you aware as the rumors are being widely broadcast. If more information becomes available, it will be posted."

They also told one parent, who was concerned for her child's safety:

"As a parent, you are more than welcome to excuse your child if you are uncomfortable." one comment said, "Such a situation is unfortunate, but we continue on and do all we can to ensure the safety of every child. Thanks!"
