New Businesses Moving In to Midtown Reno

Posted: Updated:

The construction of the Sticks Development is one reason why some local business owners say the MidTown District is thriving.

Mari Chuy's Mexican Kitchen opened nearly a year ago. It's the first business to move into the complex. "There are a lot of great things happening. And bringing more business into the district, I think is going to help more. The economy, bringing more jobs, just a lot of positive things," says owner Jesus Gutierrez.

The walls just started going up for another restaurant, just two doors down. The owners of the Gourmelt grilled cheese truck will be opening "Two Chicks." They say their new restaurant will serve traditional breakfast with a twist when it opens in May. "Reno loves breakfast. So, it's something that's needed in Midtown. So, I feel like we're going to fill a void," says Haley Wood.

Wood says Gourmelt will downscale - operating about three times a week.

Two Chicks will be open seven days a week creating about a dozen new jobs. "That's a great part of it. Just helping the local economy is a really wonderful aspect of opening a new business. So, we're really thrilled."

Both restaurants are using locally-grown products that they say will help other local businesses grow. "We've had a lot of great support from all of our community, by shop local, buy local, and keep everything here in our community," says Gutierrez.

Gutierrez says it's that philosophy that's helped the area's economic recovery -- and will continue in the future. "In the next year or two, this whole Midtown is going to be the best place to be in our community."

Gutierrez says the businesses down here are feeding off each other. When new customers come down here to try a new restaurant, it also brings exposure to the neighboring businesses.
