Single-Stream Recycling Now Underway

Posted: Updated:

Waste Management is on day-3 of the new single-stream recycling program. And they're already seeing a huge jump in participation.

Under the old system, about one out of every three households participated in curbside recycling. They're hoping that number will jump to about 50% with the new carts. But as we're seeing, some neighborhoods are exceeding expectations.

"Your glass, aluminum, tin, cardboard, paperboard, junk mail, newspaper. All of that gets to go into your recycling cart," says Sarah Polito.

Some neighborhoods are seeing a 90% participation rate for single-stream recycling. The extra volume actually caused a delay for some of the drivers. But officials say that's a good thing. "This is a fantastic problem to have. We're so happy that people are recycling and that they're excited about this. So, it's only good for the community and for all of the individuals."

Some of our viewers told us they were concerned about the delays. But Waste Management says these are normal issues during this kind of transition. "We're rolling this out. We're working hard, operating to get everybody served. So, we just ask for patience as we continue to work through this rollout."

While some aren't happy with the delays and some won't even participate in the program. There has also been a lot of positive feedback and results. "They keep saying 'Finally. Finally this is happening' - and how happy they are that it's easy. They're happy that their recyclables. They're happy that their recyclables aren't blowing down their street. They're happy that the people who are scavenging aren't on their properties any longer."

Every Reno customer should have their recycling cart delivered within the next two weeks. It's a program that Waste Management says is long overdue. "Other great cities with the United States of America have had this modernized recycling program. So, now we're just catching up with the times and allowing an ease and convenience for our customers."

Every year, Waste Management sends out magnet calendars that show your recycling days. They won't be doing that anymore as part of going green. If you need the schedule, they say you can call their customer service line at 1-(866)-909-4458.
