State Agrees to Cut Mentally Ill Inmate Wait Times

Posted: Updated:

State officials have reached a settlement that aims to reduce the backlog of mentally ill inmates waiting for treatment.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports (http://bit.ly/1eUp1kt ) Nevada settled a suit late last month that was brought by the Clark County public defender's office.

The suit claimed inmates' civil rights were being violated because they had to wait so long to get to the Lake's Crossing psychiatric facility in Sparks. The hospital is the only one in Nevada where doctors can evaluate defendants' mental suitability for trial.

Inmates were waiting an average of 85 days for transport in late 2013.

The agreement involves the state renovating a Las Vegas psychiatric hospital so it too can admit mentally ill inmates. Wait times are expected to be down to seven days by fall 2015.
