Community Flu Vaccine Clinic Monday in Reno

Posted: Updated:

From Immunize Nevada:

The CDC's most recent report on influenza released on January 18 shows widespread activity in 41 states, including Nevada. To help prevent the spread of this deadly virus, Immunize Nevada and the Washoe County Health District are partnering to offer a community flu clinic on Monday, February 3 from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Cold Springs Family Center at 18400 Village Parkway, Reno, Nev. Flu vaccines (both mist and shots) are available on a first come, first serve basis. A $20 donation is requested to cover the cost of the vaccine, however no one will be turned away due to inability to pay. No identification is required for a vaccine, however those with insurance should bring a copy of their cards.

"Influenza season is far from over," said Heidi Parker, Immunize Nevada Executive Director. "Every flu season is unpredictable and this year people are reporting severe illness and complications related to the flu. It's not too late to get a vaccine to protect yourself and those around you."

For the first time since the 2009 influenza pandemic, H1N1 is the dominant strain infecting people. While most flu strains predominantly sicken the elderly and those with existing health problems, H1N1 mostly sickens younger adults, those ages 18 to 49, and middle-aged people, ages 49 to 64, according to CDC

"All flu vaccines this season are designed to protect against H1N1," adds Parker. "Getting the vaccine has been shown to offer substantial other benefits including reducing illness, time lost from work, hospitalizations, and deaths."

In addition to the clinic next week, there are still several options for those still seeking a vaccine. Many health plans and healthcare providers, including the Washoe County Health District and local pharmacies still have flu vaccine available. More information, including the "Flu Vaccine Map Finder" is available at www.influencenevada.org/healthcare-providers.
