Natural Gas Main Breaks Near Reno Town Mall

Posted: Updated:

Authorities say construction crews working on a nearby sidewalk on South Virginia Wednesday morning accidentally cut a gas main, temporarily closing off traffic near Reno Town Mall.

A City of Reno spokeswoman says the break happened around 9:10am across from Burlington Coat Factory.

Reno police officers assisted the Reno Fire Department by closing off traffic to the area from all directions at South Virginia Street, Peckham Lane and McCarran Blvd.

Reno Battallion Chief Steve Leighton said, "The wind was on our side. We turned off the HVAC systems in the Reno Town Mall, Wells Fargo Bank, Reno Sparks Convention Center and Reno Sparks Convention and Visitors Authority (RSCVA) offices to stop fumes from the natural gas leak from entering the buildings. We also used air monitoring equipment."

No injuries were reported.

Leighton said NV Energy crews arrived within about 30 minutes and were able to shut off the natural gas.
