A judge has sentenced 33-year-old David Grimes the maximum sentence of 10 years for fatally shooting James Lay on February 4, 2013.

Prosecutors say Grimes arrived at Lay's home to drop off his son, who was also Lay's stepson. The two men got into an altercation and Grimes fatally shot Lay, who was extremely intoxicated.

The defense argued Grimes was acting in self-defense, but the judge ruled the evidence did not match that claim.

Because Grimes brought a firearm to the child exchange, he should get the maximum sentence.
