Super Bowl Brings Big Bucks to Local Sportsbooks

Posted: Updated:

The countdown to kickoff is on.

The battle between the Seattle Seahawks and Denver Broncos for the Super Bowl is just six days away and the big game brings in some big bucks for our local sportsbooks.

According to the American Gaming Association, a record $98.9 million was bet on last year's Super Bowl at Nevada casinos.

This year, just as much cash is flowing in.

"Last year, with the (San Francisco) 49ers in it, of course, we had a huge Super Bowl handle, but I think this year's going to be big, too," said Terry Cox, sports director for the Peppermill Resort Spa. "The Seahawks have a lot of local following from the northwest and the Broncos are a really, really popular team, so I think this year's handle is going to be as good, if not better than last year."

Of course, it's about more than just betting who will win or lose and by how many points.

Prop bets are always a big draw and this year there are some interesting ones at various sportsbooks.

Get this, you can bet anything from how many times Peyton Manning shouts Omaha during the game to what singer Bruno Mars will be wearing during his halftime concert.

If you want to see how your bet turns out or just enjoy the game, Cox said every television in the Peppermill will be tuned for the game and we are talking some big TVs.

"It will be wall-to-wall people. We've got three different parties here at the Peppermill, two of them are already full and the other one will be full by the time Sunday rolls around. There will be literally thousands of people here for this."

There's so much talk about the weather, since this Super Bowl will be played outside in New Jersey, but weather impacts sportsbetting here in Reno as well.

Cox says the better the weather is, the more Californians will come over the mountains this weekend.
