AP: U.S. Quietly Working to Prevent Spying on its Spying

Posted: Updated:

The Associated Press has learned that the U.S. is quietly funding research to prevent anyone from spying on the National Security Agency's surveillance of Americans' phone records.
As the Obama administration considers ending the NSA's storage of phone records collected from millions of Americans, it is funding research to develop a secure search technique to prevent phone companies or eavesdroppers from seeing who the U.S. is spying on.
The research, funded by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, is aimed at developing high-volume, encrypted searches of electronic records if they are held outside the government's possession, officials say.
The DNI has paid at least five research teams across the country to develop the coded search capability. (AP)
