A 29-year-old Gardnerville woman being held on $1 million bail in the Dec. 2 shooting death of her male roommate says she was acting in self-defense because he had beaten her multiple times and threatened to kill her.

Nicole Followill is scheduled to appear in East Fork Justice Court on Wednesday on an open murder charge after a coroner's inquest determined last week that 33-year-old Jason Thrift died by criminal means.

Gardnerville's Record-Courier ( reports Followill told detectives she shot Thrift once in the forehead with a 9 mm Glock handgun as he came at her at the Gardnerville residence they shared, but she argues it was justifiable homicide.

The open murder charge allows her to be prosecuted for anything from manslaughter to first-degree murder.
