Mild Winter Affecting Local Businesses

Posted: Updated:

The mild winter we've been experiencing has certainly had an effect on businesses that thrive, or struggle, depending on the weather.

"We saw good numbers through the Christmas holiday," said Paul Alvarez, assistant manager at Bobo's Ski and Board Reno. "Obviously, we didn't have a lot of snow like we did last year. So, things kind of started to wind down a little bit."

Despite the drop in business, the local ski shop on Moana Lane says it's been making the best of the current conditions. They've been having different sales on their skis, snowboards and other items to bring in more customers. They're also starting their Demo Days at Mount Rose Ski Tahoe. Every Friday, crews will be on the mountain to help people try out the latest ski and snowboarding equipment. For more information call (775) 826-9096.

But, not every shop is hurting right now. Since the weather has been warmer, we found more people going outside to exercise and ride their bikes. Businesses that sell bicycles like High Sierra Cycling are seeing an unusual amount of customers for the end of January.

"I've released all of my spring orders and brought them in two months early just because of the weather," said Mike Debold, High Sierra Cycling owner.

And of course, with more cyclists on the road, police are urging drivers and bicyclists to watch out for each other, and follow all the traffic laws.
