Annual Tally Finds 132 Bald Eagles at Lake Mead

Posted: Updated:

LAKE MEAD NATIONAL RECREATION AREA, Nev. (AP) -- An annual tally found 132 bald eagles this year in the Lake Mead National Recreation Area.

An organizer says that was 31 fewer than last year, but still the fifth-highest total since counts began in 1991.

National Park Service wildlife biologist Ross Haley tells the Las Vegas Review-Journal (http://bit.ly/1bndxol ) the tally isn't cause for alarm.

He says results might have been low because more than 50 bald eagles have died recently from West Nile virus in Utah, and unusually mild weather has encouraged birds to remain farther north.

The survey was done between sunrise and sunset Jan. 15.

It involved 26 people in eight boats along lakes Mead and Mohave.

Bald eagles usually winter at the Colorado River reservoirs above and below Hoover Dam because the lakes don't freeze over.
