Governor Sandoval Discusses Jobs, Drones and Margin Taxes

Posted: Updated:

When he took office three years ago Governor Brian Sandoval set a goal of bringing down the unemployment rate - and he said he could do that by creating 50,000 jobs. He says that has been accomplished. "We're actually we're ahead right now of the national average in terms of job productions. So Nevada is out performing the nation as a whole...We're number 16 in terms of jobs so we are doing well, but I agree 9% is not acceptable and I think we will have more good news as time goes on."

In fact he sees landing the designation as one of the six states for developing drones in this country as the perfect opportunity to continue that growth. "And we expect to create another 10-15,000 jobs over the next 10 years and bring a lot of new technology here and research opportunities for the universities and they are already creating courses for it...and we want them to come here to manufacture and also to test."

He sees progress with creating an international footprint for the Silver State. "In the past 16 months I've been to China, Korea, Canada, Mexico and Israel and they are all interested in investing in Nevada."

And in spite of our continued low ranking with education nationally, he cited a number of successes with education from reducing class sizes to creating high school programs and increasing kindergarten programs statewide.

And he says in his opinion the proposed margins tax is not the answer to further funding education - and would in fact hurt industry here overall. "I oppose the margins tax. It would be devastating for not only existing businesses but for bringing businesses to this state."

As for his own future, he says yes he is running for a second term as governor and hopes to help continue Nevada's recovery.

As for any aspirations toward Washington, D.C., he says it would be selfish to be talking about his own personal goals while he has Nevada to worry about.
