Reno Tahoe Tourism Booms in 2013

Posted: Updated:

Getting people to choose Northern Nevada as a get-away is all about aggressive marketing says Christopher Baum, President and CEO of the Reno-Sparks Convention and Visitors Authority.

"And the incredible thing is when our campaign runs in Northern California, it's a direct correlation - the more money we spend, the more people go to the Reno-Tahoe website. The less money we spend, the more visitation goes down."

Last year the RSCVA says the average room rate in Washoe County rose almost 10% from the year before - and hotel occupancy increased about 3% from the year before.

That helped Washoe County take in $25 million more in taxable room revenues than in 2012.

"We market specifically to the leisure market, both online, but heavily in Northern California. That's our biggest market, it's a drive market."

And doing just as much good for our economy as our friends from Northern California - our annual conventions. "On top of that we have a lot of other sports competitions - volleyball, softball and many of those will be here this year," says Baum.

The RSCVA also will also continue to work closely with the airport authority to establish more direct flights to our area in hopes of continuing this upward trend in tourism.

"It really was a significant increase in business for this destination and really showed us turning a corner in the future."
