The Carson City Sheriff's Office says the woman shot Sunday inside Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center has died of her injuries.

Deputies say Francis Dresser's husband, William walked into her third flood room at 11:30am where the 86-year-old was alone and shot her in the chest with a handgun.

A police document says the 88-year-old told an officer that his wife had been in an undisclosed accident two weeks ago and became paralyzed. It goes on to say that Dresser said his wife did not wish to live anymore and that's why he brought the gun to the hospital loaded with four bullets - two for her, and two for him.

The report states that the gun jammed after the first shot was fired.

Correctional officers were safeguarding another patient just a few doors away when the shooting happened, and they are credited for helping subdue Dresser.

The hospital was on lockdown for about two hours while officers investigated. Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong told us Sunday that none of the other three patients were threatened and hospital staff made sure they were as safe.

Detectives say they have amended the arrest charges for William Dresser to murder. He remains in Carson City Jail on suicide watch.
