Reno Woman Takes Dr. King Jr.'s Inspiration to Heart

Posted: Updated:

The legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. continues to inspire many including one Reno woman, who has taken his message to heart.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his famous 'I Have a Dream' speech had a deep impact on Verita Black Prothros as a young girl growing up in Reno.

"It was really a catalyst for me to dream big, to just go forth and do things in the community."

Verita has been involved with the community for decades now, serving on a commission for the Martin Luther King Day celebrations in our state for the last 20 years. But her personal dream came true a little more than a month ago when she opened her new shop on Moana Lane in Reno - Verita's Empowerment Boutique.

"The boutique is named that because I really wanted to be more than just another clothing outlet and I wanted to offer workshops for women to empower themselves."

The shop offers free workshops on health and wellness, how to negotiate a salary, even dating after a divorce. "To really help women understand our value and it goes along with Dr. King's thinking of what we do is not insignificant."

Prothros hopes King's legacy can inspire all of us. She says Northern Nevada has made great strides when it comes to civil rights, but we still have a ways to go. "Dr. King's later work with income inequality is still a huge issue and it will remain so for the coming years, but at least people are starting to have the conversation."

The next workshop is this Thursday at 5 pm. The topic is full body expression.
