Food Bank Invites Community to Join in "National Day of Service"

Posted: Updated:

The Food Bank of Northern Nevada is inviting the public to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by holding two volunteer sessions on "National Service Day" Monday.

They invite volunteers to help sort and pack food in their warehouse for distribution. They are located at 550 Italy Drive, off of I-80 east of Sparks.

The first session is from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. Monday. The second begins at 5:30 p.m. and runs until 8 p.m.

Groups or individuals can come out to the warehouse to participate in the day of service.  Children must be 10 years of age or older and be accompanied by an adult.

Please reserve your spot by contacting Mary Burdick at maburdick@fbnn.org or call 775-785-5957 to sign up for a designated session.

To visit the Food Bank, take I-80 East to Exit 32, USA Parkway.  Turn right at the end of the ramp and follow USA Parkway for approximately 2.5 miles and turn left on Italy Drive.  The Food Bank is just ahead on the right hand side.

Congress designated the "Martin Luther King Jr." federal holiday as "National Day of Service" back in 1994.

Meanwhile, the 16th annual community "memorial caravan" will take place at 10:30am.

Participants are invited to meet at the Second Baptist Church on Montello Street in Reno. They will drive on the section of I-580 known as Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Highway. The group will head back to the church after that.
