A woman has life-threatening injuries after she was shot at Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center in Carson City Sunday morning.

Sheriff Ken Furlong tells Channel 2 News the shooting happened at 11:30 a.m. on the 3rd floor of the hospital where the alleged shooter, identified as 88-year old William Dresser, walked into his wife's room, where she was alone, and shot her in the chest with a handgun.

Sheriff Furlong says she was in the hospital being treated for previous injuries.

"No foul play was previously suspected and details regarding her condition or treatment prior to the shooting will not be released," Furlong said.

Correctional officers were safeguarding another patient just a few doors away when the shooting happened, and they are credited for helping subdue the suspect who is now in custody.

The hospital was on lockdown for about two hours while officers investigated. Furlong says none of the other three patients were threatened and hospital staff worked to make sure they were as safe as possible.

REMSA tells us the woman has been flown to Renown Regional Medical Center for her injuries.

Meanwhile, Dresser was booked at the Carson City Jail on charges of attempted murder with a deadly weapon. Sheriff Furlong says Dresser is under suicide watch.
