Man Sentenced to Life in Prison After Killing Estranged Wife

RENO, Nev. (AP) -- A 30-year-old man has been sentenced to life in prison for the 2011 slaying of his estranged wife in Reno.

Washoe County District Judge Jerome Polaha on Thursday also imposed an eight-to-20 year consecutive prison term on Salvador Rico-Rivas for use of a deadly weapon in committing the crime.

Police say he stabbed his 26-year-old wife, Marisol Galindo-Rico, over 20 times at her Reno home during a Christmas Day 2011 domestic dispute.

He was found guilty by a jury in October of first-degree murder in violation of a temporary protection order that required him to stay away from his wife's home.

Police responded to her home and found the two unresponsive on the floor. Galindo-Rico died, while Rico-Rivas was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Prosecutors say the couple had been married over 10 years and had three children together.
