Raising Cane's Gives Back During Opening Day

Posted: Updated:

A new restaurant opened up Friday in south Reno - and used their debut as a chance to raise a little money for some local charities.

Raising Cane's is a nationwide chain of chicken tender restaurants. And today organizers held a soft open for the first ever northern Nevada location.

During the very first day of business, Raising Cane's didn't charge customers, instead asking for monetary donations. It raised over $5,000 for the Catholic Charities of Northern Nevada and St. Vincent's Programs.

Catholic Charities says they're pleasantly surprised by the restaurant's generosity. "Day one they move into town and they're focusing on charitable support and help; I mean they're not even trying to make money their first day, they're just jumping in, so we're really excited," says Peter Vogel.

On top of the charity donations, the first 100 customers in line were given prizes and got to meet with Wolf Pack mascots' Wolfie and Alphie.

Cane's opens daily 9am for lunch, dinner and late night.

Todd Graves opened the first Raising Cane's Chicken Fingers in Baton Rouge, Louisiana in 1966. Today there are more than 180 restaurants across 17 states.
