Washoe County Sheriff's Deputies say they arrested two men who tried to steal copper wire from North Valleys Regional Park on Wednesday night.

Authorities say around 9:40pm an unidentified deputy saw a suspicious vehicle near the Sierra Picnic Pavilion in the south side of the park. They say the deputy then noticed 20-year-old Mitchell Metcalf and 20-year-old Jordan Burdette pulling copper wire from a parking lot light post as well as the park's irrigation system.

Both men were arrested and now face multiple charges including destruction of property, possession of burglary tools and damage to park property.

The Washoe County Sheriff's Office offers these tips to help prevent metal theft:

*Secure foundation openings in the crawl space of your house with a good hasp and padlock.
* If possible, build a small chain link fence or cage enclosures around the outside portions of your commercial fixtures, heating and cooling systems.
* Don't store scrap metal outside or within view.
* Contact local law enforcement if you see any suspicious activity.
* Check your business and residential properties regularly.
* Keep a close eye on your irrigation systems and on vacant homes and businesses in your neighborhood.

They also say if you see any suspicious activity in your neighborhood call Secret Witness at 322-4900 or text your tip to 847411 or go online to www.secretwitness.com. Your information will remain anonymous and you could be eligible for a reward.
