Fire crews rescued a dog Thursday morning after they say it fell through an iced-over pond behind the Hidden Valley Fire Station in Reno.

Firefighters say they were conducting a shift exchange meeting around 8:30am when one firefighter noticed the dog could not climb out of the ice.

"We could see the dog was getting very tired and stopped trying to climb out," said TMFPD Captain Casey Jaggers. "Once the firefighter reached the dog, it was a simple effort to get the dog back onto the shore where he was reunited with his owner."

Crews used water rescue gear known as duck suits and safety lines to secure the dog and bring it back to safety.

"This rescue is a good reminder to everyone that pond ice has thinned and will likely remain dangerous through our current warming trend," added TMFPD Chief Charles Moore.
