Fire Chief: Substance Found at Nevada Supreme Court Not Harmful

Posted: Updated:

Carson City Fire Chief Stacey Giomi says a white powdery substance found at the Nevada Supreme Court Thursday afternoon is not harmful.

Giomi says the substance was found inside an envelope by two clerks around 1pm on the second floor of the building.

The clerks and three others were quarantined inside the building while everyone else evacuated.

Crews then went inside to investigate whether it was anthrax.

The people inside talked to officers and medical crews on the phone to give an update on how they were feeling.

Stewart Street between 5th and Musser was closed until about an hour ago when HAZMAT determined the substance was not harmful and those who were inside were finally able to leave.

Carson deputies said they are still unsure what the powder actually is, and Supreme Court security says the letter might have been was sent by a prison inmate, and that it wasn't addressed to anyone specifically at the Supreme Court.

The FBI has taken over the investigation to determine who exactly sent the letter and why.
