From the Department of Education - Nevada:

The White House last month named 102 mathematics and science teachers as recipients of the prestigious Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. Nevada's winners are both from Washoe County School District: Traci Loftin for science and Ryan Doetch for math.

Traci Loftin has been an educator for 11 years in the Washoe County School District. She taught third, fourth, and eighth grades at Caughlin Ranch Elementary and the Dilworth STEM Academy. Traci is currently a Consulting Teacher in the District. Ryan Doetch has been an educator for 10 years and has been teaching first grade at Alyce Taylor Elementary for the last 9 years.

"I congratulate these exceptional educators," said Superintendent of Public Instruction Dale Erquiaga. "Math and science are key components of getting students ready for college and careers in this century. I am thrilled that these two Nevada educators were chosen for this national recognition."

"We are so proud of all of our teachers, and we're grateful that the hard work of these two teachers is being acknowledged on a national level," said Superintendent Pedro Martinez. "Our teachers educate and advocate for our students every day, and this is truly a wonderful honor and acknowledgement of the dedication and professionalism they bring to our classrooms every day."

The Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching is awarded annually to outstanding K-12 science and mathematics teachers across the county. Each year, the award alternates between elementary and secondary school teachers. The 2012 awardees announced last month teach kindergarten through 6th grade. Winners of the Presidential Award receive a $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation to be used at their discretion. They are also invited to Washington, D.C. for an awards ceremony and several days of educational and celebratory events.

Nominations are now open for the 2014 Awards, which will honor mathematics and science (including computer science) teachers working in grades K-6. Nominations close on April 1, 2014.  Please go to www.paemst.org to nominate a deserving K-6 teacher.
