Posted: Updated:

A Reno gang leader heard on jailhouse telephone recordings describing himself as a "shot caller" has been sentenced to up to life in prison after he was convicted of ordering the shooting death of a 16-year-old rival gang member.

Washoe District Judge Janet Berry sentenced 26-year-old Gustavo Alvizar on Tuesday to life with the possibility of parole after 10 years in what she said was the "stupidest crime of the century."

Deputy District Attorney Kelly Kossow told the Reno Gazette-Journal (http://tinyurl.com/np8gh3o ) Alvizar is considered to be fairly high up in the leadership of the Norteño gang.

Police say he was driving a car in southeast Reno in February when he ordered a fellow gang member in the car to shoot Cesar Ortiz-Rodriguez, a rival Sureño he didn't even know.
