NDOW: Oxygen Levels Remain Low at Sparks Marina for Fish

Posted: Updated:

There's new information about the thousands of dead fish at the Sparks Marina.

Officials with the Nevada Department of Wildlife say oxygen levels in the water are so low that the marina cannot sustain fish life right now.

Chris Healy says at least 100,000 trout, catfish and bass have died, many of them washed ashore last month. Tests confirmed the lack of oxygen is to blame.

Healy says that can happen when the seasons change, but still biologists say what's happening with the low oxygen levels is unusual.

The marina is restocked with fish every year usually around February, but Healy says that won't happen next month unless the oxygen levels in the marina's waters improve.
