Possible Exposure Investigation in McDermitt

Posted: Updated:

Officials with the Fort McDermitt Paiute-Shoshone Tribe near the Nevada-Oregon border are investigating a medical situation involving the use of non-sterile blood glucose monitoring equipment.

Tribal Chairman Tildon Smart says the diabetes wellness program with Indian Health Service, or IHS, recently conducted a weight loss program called a "NUMU Challenge." During signups, participants had their blood glucose levels checked. Smart says he found out last week that an employee with IHS used the same equipment -- the device that holds the lancet, or needle -- to test each person's blood.

As a result, Smart says they are looking into the possibility that at least 21 people may have been exposed to infectious diseases.

"It was lack of training," Smart told Channel 2 News on Sunday. "The individual that exposed everybody to it, according to statements made by IHS, was directed not to administer the tests or anything like that and continued to do so anyway."

Smart says the person responsible for re-using the equipment has been put on suspension. As for the next step, testing will begin Monday to determine if anyone contracted anything.

For more information, you can call Indian Health Service at (775) 532-8522.

We have put in calls to Indian Health Service to get their side of this situation.

We'll let you know when they get back to us.
