NFL Playoffs Bring Area Economic Boost

Posted: Updated:

The divisional round of the NFL playoffs begin Saturday - and those games are making an economic impact, right here in Reno. Especially, when you factor in a certain San Francisco team.

Playoff football means more people coming in this weekend placing higher bets. Many of them -- betting on the local favorite.

"Whether they're going to watch it here or they're going to go back home and watch it in their living room, they want to have action on the Niners," says John Pinto.

Pinto says if San Francisco makes it to the Super Bowl the money bet on the big game could break a record. He says every 49ers playoff win means more business for the Silver Legacy bringing Bay Area residents to Reno. "We've got three weeks of Niners fans coming in here. They're taking advantage of our restaurants, the table games, slot machines. They live in the sports book. The bleachers that we put up will be filled."

Bully's Sports Bars are also getting some extra business from the post-season. With many Wolf Pack fans coming in to cheer on former Nevada Quarterback, Colin Kaepernick.

"I would say we would normally be 75 to 80-percent. With the Niners and Kaepernick playing, it's well over 100-percent. People with standing room only," says Jody Clark.

Bully's will have specials during the games including $2 domestic beers.

Clark says the games make for an exciting weekend. "Everybody's into it. They're high-fiving people they don't even know. You have the flavor of the Packers vs. the Niners and other teams. Everybody has their favorite team and they're going against each other. There's a lot of trash-talking going on but it's always good fun and a great atmosphere."

Employees at Buffalo Wild Wings Agree -- the playoff games up the ante for football fans.

"A lot more of the diehards come out for their team. They're here in their full outfits. They have their jerseys on, their hats. They're excited. It's a lot of fun. It's very much of a game atmosphere, so it's like you're actually at the game," says Danielle Howard.

You can get $2 drinks during the games -- among other deals. And you can even cheer for the Panthers, but you might be outnumbered. "You'll have a couple of the opposing teams but it's a lot of fun. Everybody's cheering for the same team."

Buffalo Wild Wings has 64 TVs around the restaurant and they're expecting a packed house, this weekend. And on Sunday, they're even opening up and hour and a half early, so people can come in at 9:30 and have a seat for the football game.
