Sen. Reid Changes Course on GOP, Jobless Bill

Posted: Updated:

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is retreating from his refusal to allow votes on Republican-backed changes in legislation relating to long-term jobless benefits.

On Thursday, the Nevada Democrat said flatly he would not allow the Senate to vote on any proposed GOP changes.

But now, Reid spokesman Adam Jentleson says the majority leader is absolutely willing to allow votes on a reasonable number of relevant amendments from Republicans.

The spokesman did not say how many Reid had in mind, or what he meant by relevant.

The bill would take the place of a program that expired late last month. It is stalled short of the 60 votes needed for passage, with lawmakers from the two parties haggling over details including methods for offsetting the cost.  (AP)
