Nevada Medicaid Enrollments Surge Under Health Reform

Posted: Updated:

Nevada's Medicaid enrollments are higher than expected under the new health law.

Health and Human Services Director Mike Willden says the Medicaid caseload has grown by more than 10,000 from September to December.

Figures to be presented Thursday to the state's health insurance exchange board also show that 74,000 have been deemed newly eligible as of Jan. 5, when the state expanded its eligibility to include childless adults.

That report adds that the majority of people choosing private insurance through Nevada's online web portal are in southern Nevada, which makes up 68% of all policies sold.

In contrast, people in rural areas account for just 2%.

Delays reported in connection with the program are due to incomplete applications. "We've learned many people thought their applications were complete, when in reality, they still needed to enter more information," says Willden. It is important people complete their applications. "We are appreciative of the assistance provided by several community partners to help individuals apply for Medicaid. This really is a community wide effort to make sure Nevadans are insured."

Prior to the launch of the Affordable Care Act, there were approximately 600,000 Nevadans without health insurance coverage. Nevada had the second highest rate of uninsured at 22% of its population compared to a national average of 16%.

(The Associated Press also contributed to the report.)
