Nevada Ranked Last Again for Education

Posted: Updated:

A new report once again says students in Nevada have a lower chance of success than their counterparts in any other state.

The magazine Education Week on Thursday released its annual Quality Counts report, which compares states by factors including student performance and school financing. It combines those with demographic data such as parent education level, income and language abilities.

Nevada earned a D grade and ended up last on the list, behind Mississippi and New Mexico. The state has been in 51st place on the ranking since 2010.

The report acknowledges the gains made in certain academic areas by Nevada students over the past ten years. Between 2003 and 2013, Nevada experienced the third highest gains on the NAEP 8th grade reading assessment and ninth highest gains on the NAEP 4th grade reading assessment. Score gains in Nevada were 6.8 and 9.4 for grades 4 and 8, respectively. The national average gains on the NAEP reading assessments were 4.2 and 4.7 for grades 4 and 8, respectively. Additionally, between 2003 and 2013, Nevada experienced a 10.2-point gain on the NAEP 8th grade math assessment, placing it tenth in the nation for such gains.

State superintendent Dale Erquiaga called the measurement "a little unfair" because the ranking is based largely on factors outside the school system's control.

He says the report is a call for the entire community to act, not just the school system.

(The Associated Press also contributed to this report.)
