Carlin Man Pleads No Contest in 1996 Baby Death

Posted: Updated:

A Carlin man who had his life sentence for killing a baby overturned by the Nevada Supreme Court after serving 16 years in prison has pleaded no contest to involuntary manslaughter and is expected to be sentenced to time served.

Patrick Cody McCormick was arrested in 1996 and convicted of killing 14-month-old Jacob Jones. Prosecutors argued McCormick had fatally beaten and shaken the child.

The state's high court overturned his murder conviction in 2012, ruling that a penicillin allergy couldn't be ruled out as a cause of death.

McCormick has been free on bond since February.

The Elko Daily Free Press reports that he told District Judge Nancy Porter on Tuesday he agreed to a plea deal to avoid going to trial and the possibility of a greater charge.
