Nevada Health Link Website Faces Backlog

Peter Kozel played by the rules. He signed up for insurance for his wife through Nevada Health Link in November. He paid his premium on time and he was assured he'd have coverage as of January first.

His wife Debbie has had four strokes and needs ongoing care, yet he is still waiting for a health insurance card. So he called and called and called. And finally the answer was that there was a backlog of paperwork and that his information hadn't been loaded into the system yet...therefore they couldn't even give him a membership number or an account number. If his wife needed care, he'd have to pay for it out of pocket.

"I'm just so frustrated," Kozel said from his home in Sparks. "We've canceled appointments waiting. And I'm frustrated. I did what they said to do and I did it on time."

And according to an independent insurance agent in Reno, Jake Young, Kozel is just one of thousands.

"I've been getting calls for days," Young says. "Even I can't get through to the Nevada Health Link folks and I have a special broker's number. I think they are just overwhelmed. And the insurance companies are getting like eight times as many calls as they did before with all these new clients and they can't keep up."

In trying to call from Channel 2 today, we also got no answers, just a recording saying that if you left a message they'd get back to you. 

A letter sent out from Nevada Health Link this week said if you had paid your premium and hadn't received a card, simply call your insurance company directly to get a number. But without the clients yet entered into their systems no number can be given out on the phone either. So the advice has been to just pay for any appointments out of pocket or reschedule them.

Young's advice is to keep calling and asking for answers, and plan on another week or two for delays while insurance companies catch up.
